Aviva life insurance over 50 is sold direct as a single product, Over 50s Life Insurance: there are no health questions, acceptance is guaranteed for UK residents aged 50 to 80, and it pays a fixed lump sum when you die. Aviva also insures Post Office Over 50s Life Cover, which is sold on different terms, so the direct plan comes first here and the Post Office version after it.

Policy terms only take you so far. Send your details through the enquiry form here and a broker with FCA authorisation can talk through cover at your age by phone; it is free, and the call is not an Aviva quote.

Who Aviva will accept, and on what basis

Aviva's over-50 page (footer code WC05649 09/2026) says: "Sometimes referred to as whole of life cover, it lasts for as long as you live rather than a set period of time." It is "not a savings or investment plan" and pays only on a successful claim when you die.

The policy summary (DA03015) and policy conditions (DA03016) are July 2023 prints, still the two documents that page linked when we read it on 20 October 2026. The summary says "We guarantee to accept you with no health questions" if, when you apply, you are aged between 50 and 80, are in the UK with a legal right to live there, and treat the UK as your main home with no current intention of moving permanently; the conditions exclude the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar from "the UK". The application asks for a date of birth and smoker status.

You choose either the cover amount or the monthly premium. Aviva's page says you "can pay between £5 and £100", and several policies are allowed, up to £100 a month in premiums across all of them. Each policy covers one life: "you can’t take this policy out jointly", though a partner can apply for their own.

The payout is usually far smaller than one from Aviva's term Life Insurance Plan, covered on the page about Aviva's life insurance range; guaranteed life insurance compares acceptance rules across insurers.

Death in year one: accidents and natural causes

From the summary and conditions:

When the death happensWhat Aviva says it pays
On or after the first anniversary of the policy, for any reasonThe cover amount shown in the policy schedule
Before the first anniversary, as a result of an accidentThe cover amount, subject to the exceptions below
Before the first anniversary, from natural causesAn amount equal to the premiums you have paid

Natural causes means "Sickness, disease or physical disorder"; accidental death means death from bodily injury caused by accidental, external, violent and visible means, and not as a direct result of those natural causes.

The accident route has limits. In the first 12 months the cover amount is not paid if the accidental death happens while you are living outside "the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand", or is caused directly or indirectly by one of a listed set of causes, among them alcohol or drug misuse, "taking part in a criminal act", "flying except as a paying passenger on a commercial airline" and hazardous pursuits, defined as motor sports, mountaineering that needs ropes or guides, potholing and diving with breathing apparatus. In those cases the conditions pay the premiums you have paid. Waiting periods in life insurance explains early periods more generally.

How long the premiums run

The premium is guaranteed to stay the same throughout the policy. It is collected monthly by Direct Debit for a premium term of "a maximum of 30 years, or until the anniversary date after your 90th birthday, whichever is earlier", which your policy schedule confirms.

Aviva gives two examples. Start at 55 and you pay for 30 years, which "brings you to the age of 85"; start at 69 and you pay for 21 years, because you turn 90 first. After that: "Once we stop collecting premiums your policy continues until we pay a claim."

The cover amount is fixed too, and inflation will reduce its value over time. Nothing can be changed once the policy has started, though you could take out another policy to top it up, within the £100 limit and subject to what is available then. The summary also warns: "The lump sum paid out could be less than the total amount you’ve paid in premiums." A quote shows the age at which premiums paid equal the cover amount, "if applicable"; what over-50s plans cost looks at that across providers.

On tax, the summary says payouts are currently free of income and capital gains tax but may be subject to inheritance tax unless the policy is in a suitable trust; whether a life insurance payout is taxable and how a policy goes into trust cover that. A broker can go through how a plan of this type looks at your age once you have left a few details in the form.

Missed payments and changing your mind

Aviva allows 60 days from each due date to pay. If a claim comes in that window, the unpaid premium is deducted from the benefit; if the 60 days pass, the policy is cancelled, no claim can be made and nothing already paid is returned. The policy has no cash-in value at any time.

Cancelling on purpose has two stages. For 30 days, counted from the later of receiving your policy documents and the day Aviva tells you when the policy will start, premiums are refunded. After that, in the summary's words, "You can still choose to cancel after the 30 days, but you won’t get any money back." The general picture is in what happens if you cancel life insurance.

A payout illustration from Aviva

Aviva's cost explainer, last updated 16 September 2026 with data from September 2026, holds the premium at £25 for four people. It is Aviva's illustration, not a quote; what you were offered would depend on your age and smoker status on the day you apply:

Person in Aviva's exampleCover amount in pounds at a £25 premium
Greg, 51, non-smoker7,988
Amanda, 65, smoker3,002
Brandon, 74, non-smoker2,533
Jennifer, 74, smoker1,921

Aviva's reading is that "As age increases, the sum assured decreases, even for non-smokers", and that smoking also affects the level of cover. The year-one rule above applies to each of them.

Post Office Over 50s Life Cover: Aviva insures it, the terms differ

Post Office Over 50s Life Cover is underwritten by Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited but sold on its own terms, which differ from the direct plan on first-year deaths, accidental death, when payments stop and missed premiums; Post Office over 50s life insurance sets those terms out. The over-50s plan comparison sets both beside SunLife's plan, British Seniors' plan and others.

Gift card, loyalty discount and star ratings

Aviva's page offers an Amazon.co.uk gift card worth £50 to £200 after six monthly premiums, outside the policy terms and open to withdrawal or change at any time. Existing Aviva customers buying direct can get a loyalty benefit: up to 10% more cover for the same premium, or 10% off the premium. Neither changes what the policy pays.

On ratings, Aviva says "Our cover is rated 5 Stars by Defaqto"; that is Aviva describing itself. Post Office cites its own 4.5-star rating from Tribe. Neither is a customer review; for what customers say about claims and service, check recent reviews on the review sites yourself, since scores move. Aviva's claims figures are on the range page linked above; whether over-50s cover is worth buying collects what commentators say.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aviva's over 50 plan guaranteed?

Acceptance is: Aviva guarantees to accept you with no health questions if you meet its age and residence criteria. The full cover amount is paid from the first anniversary for any cause of death, but in the first 12 months a natural-cause death returns the premiums paid.

Can I get Aviva life insurance over 60 or at 80?

Aviva's single age band is 50 to 80 at the time you apply, so 60 and 80 are both within it. Age changes the cover amount a premium buys, as Aviva's September 2026 example shows.

Can a couple take out one Aviva over-50s policy?

Not on Aviva's direct version, which covers one person; each partner takes out their own.

Does it pay for a funeral?

Aviva says the lump sum can be spent on anything, funeral costs included, but the plan is not a funeral plan and pays the cover amount rather than arranging a funeral. Funeral cover compared sets the two ideas side by side.
