General information only
Understanding Bereavement publishes research and general information about bereavement, and general information about life insurance, in the United Kingdom. Nothing on this site is personal financial, insurance, legal, tax or medical advice, or bereavement counselling. We do not assess suitability, guarantee that anyone will be offered cover, or recommend a particular insurer or policy.
Our regulatory status
Understanding Bereavement is not an insurer, an insurance broker or an FCA-authorised firm. If you submit an enquiry, we introduce you to an FCA-authorised life insurance broker. That broker is responsible for any regulated advice, demands-and-needs assessment, recommendation and insurance arrangement. You can check the broker and its permissions on the Financial Services Register.
Commercial relationship
We may receive a fee for introducing you to a broker. A broker may receive commission from an insurer and may charge fees. Before going ahead, ask the broker to explain which insurers it can compare, any important limits to its service, all fees and how it is paid.
No whole-market, price or acceptance promise
We do not promise that a broker covers the whole market, that every insurer or type of policy is available, that using a broker will be cheaper than buying direct, or that cover will be offered. Prices and terms depend on current products and individual circumstances, including health. Comparisons should be made on a like-for-like basis.
Accuracy and availability
We aim to keep the site accurate, but statistics are revised, services change, and insurance products, tax rules and regulation change too. Content may contain errors or become out of date. Check current policy documents and written information from the relevant insurer or authorised broker before acting, and check research figures against their cited sources before relying on them.
Research and bereavement information
Our research summarises published evidence about groups of people. It cannot describe or predict anything about an individual child or family, and it is not a substitute for professional support. If you are worried about a child or about yourself, speak to your GP or a qualified professional. In an emergency, call 999.
Using the research
You may quote, cite and reuse our research, including in funding bids, reports and teaching materials. A link back to the study is welcome but not required. Please do not present it as your own work or alter figures from it.
Use of the site
You may use this site for lawful personal and professional research. Do not attempt to interfere with the service, submit false information, scrape the site in a way that disrupts it, or misuse another person's details.
