Whether one person can cancel a joint life insurance policy depends on who the insurer treats as the policy's owner, and the terms below differ. Royal London says that where a plan is jointly owned, both owners must give notice, and Legal & General's terms read "you" on a joint policy as both people covered. Other insurers deal with it through their own definitions and consent rules.

If you are not sure where your joint policy stands, an FCA-authorised broker can look over who owns it with you, free, when they call back. Your details go in the form on this page.

Who owns a joint life policy?

Two roles are easy to run together: the people whose lives are covered, and the people who own the policy and give the insurer instructions. They can be the same two people, but the insurers' documents treat the owner as a separate idea.

  • Aviva's Life Insurance+ conditions (AL50002, February 2026) use "you" for "the policyholder(s) named in the policy schedule, or anyone else who becomes the legal owner of the policy".
  • Vitality's Personal Protection plan provisions (VLTD174857WF_J3779_02/2025) use "you" for the plan owner or their legal successors.
  • Zurich's Personal Protection terms (PW720480017, April 2026) use "you" for the policyholder or policyholders, and Legal & General's Life Insurance terms (QGI12849, October 2026) use "you" for whoever is legally entitled to the payout, such as a trustee or assignee, and add: "If there's more than one person covered then we mean all lives insured."

The point for a couple is that ownership can move. Once a policy has been put in trust or assigned, the people who can instruct the insurer may change. Royal London's Personal Menu Plan details for life or critical illness cover (July 2025) say what follows for cancelling:

"If the plan that your cover is under is jointly owned, both owners must give us notice. If you’ve put your plan under trust, or if you’ve assigned your legal rights under your plan to someone else, the trustees or assignee must give us written notice that they wish to cancel."

The trust route has its own page, cancelling a policy held in trust, and joint life insurance in trust explains how a trust changes who controls joint cover.

What do insurers' terms say about two people acting together?

Royal London's wording above is the plainest on cancelling outright. Other insurers phrase their joint-policy rules around consent, as the table shows. Each row is one insurer's own document, not a rule for the market.

Insurer and documentWhat it says about both people
Royal London, Personal Menu Plan (July 2025)Both owners must give notice to cancel a jointly owned plan.
Zurich, Personal Protection terms (April 2026)To use its separation benefit, "you must both agree to cancel this policy".
Aviva, Life Insurance+ conditions (February 2026)Its separation benefit can be used only if you and the other life covered agree to cancel the original policy.
Legal & General, Life Insurance terms (October 2026)Both policyholders on a joint life policy must approve declining an inflation increase, and separating a joint policy needs the consent of both lives insured.

Vitality's provisions say "You can cancel your plan at any time", with "you" meaning the plan owner. How that works for a plan with two owners is something to put to the insurer before acting.

The documents above are the plan terms, and the schedule that arrives with a policy shows who the policyholders are. The easiest first step is to read that schedule and then ask the insurer who it will accept an instruction from.

What happens to the cover if a joint policy is cancelled?

Because both lives sit on one contract, cancelling ends the cover for each of them, not only for whoever asked. Legal & General's terms say "If you cancel your policy your cover will end and no further premiums will be payable." Aviva's conditions add that if you cancel, you will not be able to make a claim. Refunds and the cooling-off window are set out in cancelling life insurance and what you get back and the cancellation period.

Whose signature your own insurer would accept on a cancellation is something a broker can check with you, free, when they ring.

Stopping the direct debit is not a tidy way round the question. Royal London's plan details say to contact your bank about the direct debit only if you intend to cancel all the covers under the plan, and Aviva's conditions say it cancels the policy if premiums are not paid within the 60-day period, after which no claim can be made. On a joint Aviva policy that ends the cover for both people.

Can one person leave a joint policy without ending it for the other?

Under the separation options in the table, only with the other person's agreement. Aviva, Zurich and Legal & General each describe ending the joint policy and starting single cover in its place, and each needs both people to agree, so a partner who wants out can ask but cannot do it alone.

The deadlines, evidence and health questions that go with each route are set out in the page on joint cover after a divorce. For how a joint policy pays out at all, see the joint life explainer, and for the single-versus-joint choice, joint against individual cover.

Before you contact the insurer, it helps to have three things in front of you: the policy schedule, the name of the person who pays the premium, and whether the policy has ever been put in trust or assigned.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my partner off a joint life insurance policy?

Possibly, if the insurer's terms allow it. Legal & General's list of changes includes removing one person from a joint policy, and the request needs consent and an amendment form, so it is not automatic.

Can I cancel a joint policy that is in trust?

Under Royal London's plan details it is the trustees, or an assignee, who must give written notice to cancel, not the two people covered. The trust deed and the trustees' role are explained on the life insurance trustee page.

Can I cancel joint life insurance if my partner has stopped replying?

That depends on whose names are on the policy schedule as owners. Royal London's wording needs notice from both owners of a jointly owned plan, so one partner's request alone would not meet it.

If you are unsure whose instruction an insurer would accept on your joint policy, the form here gets a broker to phone and go over the cancellation rules with you at no cost.
