You can get funeral insurance quotes online or on a freephone number direct from the insurers that sell over-50s life cover, and some plans are also sold through price comparison websites. A quote is worked out from your age, whether you smoke and either the monthly premium or the cash sum you choose; the rest of this page covers the routes, the printed examples and what a quote does not show.

Someone arranging a funeral this week may be able to claim help with the bill. GOV.UK describes a Funeral Expenses Payment in England and Wales, mygov.scot describes Scotland's Funeral Support Payment, and nidirect describes a Funeral Expenses Payment from the Social Fund in Northern Ireland. GOV.UK says its payment will not usually cover all of the costs, and a funeral can also be paid for from the estate of the person who died.

For funeral cover figures that fit your age, an FCA-authorised broker phones you, without charge, after a short enquiry on the form on this page.

Where can you get a funeral insurance quote?

Insurers that sell over-50s cover directly put the quote tool on their own site and a freephone number beside it. This is what four of them say, in their own words or close to them.

  • SunLife's Guaranteed Over 50 Plan page offers a free quote online and gives a free number, 0800 904 7674.
  • Legal & General's page invites you to "Get a quote in 2 minutes" from its online tool and also lists 0800 316 8539, open 8.30am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday.
  • Aviva's page has a "Get a quote" button, a "Retrieve a quote" button for one you started earlier, and 0800 096 8086.
  • The Post Office's page describes a different route: you give a few details and choose how much to leave, then "we'll give you a quick call to give you your quote and check you're happy with the policy". The plan is underwritten by Aviva.

Each of these is an online or freephone route, so a quote can start from home. Who sells you the policy can depend on the route: the Post Office says its plan is arranged and sold by Neilson Financial Services Limited when you buy by phone or on the Post Office website, and by the firm behind the comparison site when you buy through a price comparison website. The page on getting a life insurance quote covers other kinds of cover, and funeral cover for a child has its own limits.

What a funeral cover quote asks and what it shows

These plans are sold on guaranteed acceptance: no medical questions, but an age window and UK residence. What you choose is either the monthly premium or the sum paid out. Legal & General says the premium "is dependent on your age and smoker status", and Aviva says that if you pick the cover amount, the price is based on your personal circumstances, such as your age and whether you smoke.

The figures are each insurer's own, from its web page or key facts, and they change; check the insurer's current page. In every case cover carries on for life once premiums stop.

The same three cautions appear on the SunLife, Legal & General and Aviva pages. The sum is fixed, so rising prices erode its buying power. You can pay in more than the plan pays out, depending on how long you live. And stopping payments early ends the cover with nothing back. What funeral insurance is covers how the product works; the insurer's quote will show you its own numbers.

Not sure which age window or premium limit fits your age? The broker can settle that during the call, which costs nothing.

Example quotes, as insurers print them

SunLife's page shows what a non-smoker could get from its plan for £20 a month: £5,694 at 50, £4,470 at 60, £2,776 at 70 and £1,442 at 80. It describes these as payouts for new customers who are non-smokers, "Correct as at October 2025"; that table was still on its page on 26 October 2026.

The Post Office page works from the other end. For £5,000 of cover it prints monthly premiums for non-smokers of £18.99 at 50, £25.20 at 60, £39.69 at 70 and £76.63 at 80. The page is undated; these were its figures on 26 October 2026.

These are two insurers' own illustrations, one fixing the premium and one fixing the cover, so they cannot be set side by side as prices. They do show that for the same money the payout falls as the age at which you start rises. Your own quote will differ, and nothing here says what you would be offered. Over-50s life insurance costs sets out more providers' examples.

To see how numbers like these come out at your age, ask a broker to ring you with some by using the form here.

What is paid if you die in the first year or two

A quote shows the full cash sum, but each plan sets an opening period in which a death from natural causes pays something else. Accidental death is treated differently, and each insurer defines accident in its own terms.

On the SunLife, Legal & General and Aviva plans, a natural-cause death in the first year returns the premiums paid rather than the cover, while an accidental death in that year pays the full sum. The Post Office plan returns 1.5 times all premiums paid if death in the first 12 months is not accidental, and two times the benefit amount if it is, and Scottish Friendly's My Mutual plan runs its opening period for 2 years. The funeral cover waiting period page sets out each insurer's wording, including what counts as an accident.

Applying for funeral cover online

Once you have a quote, the online application is the same product with your details attached. Aviva asks you to read its policy summary and conditions before you apply, and Legal & General asks you to read its key documents. Both SunLife and Legal & General describe a 30-day window to cancel: SunLife says payments are refunded if you cancel less than 30 days after you receive your policy documents, and Legal & General says it refunds premiums if you cancel within 30 days of receiving your Policy Schedule.

A quote is also not the cost of a funeral. The insurers say so themselves: Legal & General says its plan "is not designed to meet the full costs of a funeral, and does not guarantee to do so." Whether life insurance covers funeral costs goes into that, and the funeral cover comparison sets out how several plans differ. A prepaid funeral plan is a separate product from insurance, and the FCA says its provider must be authorised: see funeral plans and the FCA.

Rather than work through every tool alone, request a callback through the enquiry form here; a broker will go through the insurers it deals with and how each might view your age and smoking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get funeral insurance?

The over-50s plans above accept UK residents inside an age window without medical questions: 49 to 85 at SunLife, 50 to 80 at Legal & General, Aviva and the Post Office. Those are the insurers' own conditions, and they sit alongside the early-years rules in the table above.

Where can I get funeral cover near me?

The quote routes described on this page are online and by freephone, and a broker call-back is by phone, so you can start from where you are. Plans are written for UK residents, not for a particular town.

Is there a best place to get funeral cover quotes?

No page can say that for you, because the quote depends on your age, whether you smoke and the premium or sum you choose. The plans differ in age windows, caps and opening-period terms, as the tables show. A broker can explain how they compare for you on the call-back.
