No, life insurance is not mandatory in the UK. Legal & General and Aviva both say no law requires it even when you take out a mortgage, the borrowing where people most expect it, and a general guide to UK insurance calls it not compulsory. What does happen is that some mortgage lenders make cover a condition of their own offer, so whether you have to have it turns on a particular lender's terms rather than on the law.
Whether cover suits your family or a loan, an FCA-authorised broker will weigh it with you by phone; the ring-back you request on the form on this page has no fee attached.
Is life insurance ever a legal requirement?
Legal & General (5 December 2025) puts that very question as a heading in its guide, and answers it in a mortgage setting:
No, there isn’t a specific law that states that you need life insurance when you apply for a mortgage.
Some insurance is compulsory, which makes the contrast useful. GOV.UK's page on employers' liability insurance (read 26 October 2026) says "You must get Employers’ Liability ( EL ) insurance" as soon as you become an employer, and that you can be fined £2,500 every day you are not properly insured. GOV.UK says that cover helps an employer pay compensation to an employee injured or made ill by the work they do. It is a different product from a policy that pays out when you die.
For life cover itself, Expatica's guide to insurance in the UK (last updated 26 May 2025) states the general position: "As in many other countries, life insurance in the UK is not compulsory but many individuals take out a policy to provide for their family and dependents in the event of their death." So the real question is who would be left short if you died, which is the test MoneyHelper sets out further down.
Can a mortgage lender insist on life cover?
A lender can ask, even though the law does not. Aviva's guide for home movers (last updated 6 August 2026) puts both halves in one line:
You're not legally required to have life insurance for a mortgage, but some lenders may ask you to take out cover.
Which lenders do, and what they accept, differs, and the detail is on a page of its own: do you need life insurance for a mortgage covers the lender's side and what happens if you cannot get cover. Landlords face a related set of questions, which life insurance for a buy-to-let mortgage goes through. Neither changes the legal position above: the requirement, where there is one, comes from the lender's offer and not from legislation.
Do business loans and personal guarantees call for life insurance?
Borrowing for a company is a separate case, and here the sources describe the cover rather than a rule. Legal & General's Business Loan Protection page (read 26 October 2026) describes a policy that can help a business clear an overdraft, loan or commercial mortgage after the death of a key employee during the policy, or a terminal illness diagnosis where their life expectancy is under 12 months, with cover that should reflect what the business owes. Our guide to business loan protection insurance explains how it works, and business protection in the UK covers the wider range of owner cover. Whether your company's lender would expect cover alongside a loan turns on the lender and the borrowing, so it is worth raising on the free call-back.
Directors often meet the issue through a personal guarantee instead. The lender iwoca explains in its guide (dated 23 October 2026) that this is a legal commitment to repay the company's debt yourself if the company cannot, and that every new iwoca Flexi-Loan comes with one from the director or directors. Its guide mentions personal guarantee insurance, which it describes as paying some of what you owe if a guarantee is called in. That is a separate product from a life policy.
When does MoneyHelper say you might not need it?
Because nothing forces the decision, the useful test is the one MoneyHelper sets out in its guide, archived August 2025. Its guide says cover is aimed at people with children still at school, a partner who depends on their pay, or a household paying a mortgage. It says you do not need it if:
- you are single;
- your partner earns enough for your family to live on;
- you are on a low income and could qualify for State benefits.
It also says to check what you have through work, because employee packages often include ‘death in service benefits’ that will provide an amount of cover that’s linked to your salary. That cover stops if you leave the employer. Sizing a policy is a separate sum, worked through in how much life cover do I need, while do I need life insurance takes the wider question of who should consider it.
If you are unsure which of those describes you, a broker can go through it when they return your call from the form here.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to have life insurance?
No, it is voluntary. Where cover is expected at all, it is a lender's own condition on a particular loan. Whether it is worth having depends on who relies on your income.
Does my employer have to give me life cover?
No. Royal London's guide to death in service (published 18 September 2023) says "Not all employers offer a death in service benefit, as it’s an additional extra rather than a legal requirement." If your job does include it, MoneyHelper notes it ends when you leave that employer.
Is life insurance required for a self-employed person?
Working for yourself does not change the general position: cover is a choice. A lender may set conditions on a particular loan, and the free call-back is the place to ask how that might affect your own borrowing.
Can I be refused a mortgage if I cannot get life insurance?
That depends on the lender, and the mortgage guide looks at it in full.
Ask for the call-back through the form here if the answer still feels unclear; the broker who rings can set out the options without charge or commitment on your side.
