You do not need life insurance for a student loan from the UK government, because the loan is cancelled if the borrower dies. If you are looking into life insurance for student loans because you are worried a debt could pass to your family, GOV.UK's answer is that the Student Loans Company cancels the loan. The sections below set out the exact wording, what a family does after a death, and when cover is worth thinking about for other borrowing.
Cover for the rest of your finances is a separate matter. If you would like to go over it, use the enquiry box here and a broker authorised by the FCA can ring you to go through it; asking costs nothing.
Is a UK student loan cancelled if you die?
Yes, for the government loans that GOV.UK describes. Its guide to repaying a student loan (updated October 2024) says: "The Student Loans Company (SLC) will cancel the person’s student loan." The Student Loans Company's main guide to its terms and conditions for 2026 to 2027 (under the heading "When your loans will be cancelled") puts it from the borrower's side, as a circumstance in which a loan "may be cancelled and you’ll never have to pay it back, such as if you die before you pay the loan off or if you become disabled and permanently unfit for work."
The same sentence appears, under the same heading, in the Student Loans Company's separate 2026 to 2027 guide for Scottish student loans, and its guide to Advanced Learner Loans carries its own version (see the questions below). GOV.UK's statement sits in the part of its repaying guide on loans being written off or cancelled. For a loan none of these guides covers, the Student Loans Company can confirm the position. Repayments are also tied to income rather than to the size of the debt: GOV.UK says that what you owe "has no impact on how much you repay each year".
In that section, the main guide adds a caution: "Loan cancellation may not apply to you if you’re in breach of any repayment obligations." What that means for a particular loan is a question for the Student Loans Company itself.
What does a family have to do after a borrower has died?
If you are reading this because someone has died, we are sorry. The loan does not cancel itself, so someone has to tell the Student Loans Company. GOV.UK says: "You need to let SLC know that the person has died and provide evidence (for example an original death certificate), as well as the person’s customer reference number (CRN)."
The Student Loans Company's own page for this, a GOV.UK guidance page updated in February 2025, says you can call or write to tell them. It lists what to send alongside the customer reference number: an original death certificate, an original coroner’s interim certificate, a copy of a coroner’s certificate stamped by the coroner, or a copy of a foreign death certificate. It is plain on one point: "SLC cannot cancel any loans without evidence."
It is one of several organisations a family may need to contact: the GOV.UK page on what to do after someone dies (updated December 2024) includes the Student Loans Company in its list, if the person had a student loan from them. If the bills for the funeral are also on your mind, how people pay for a funeral sets out the options.
Does life insurance pay off a student loan, or can the loan take the payout?
On the documents above, there is no student loan balance left to pay once the Student Loans Company has cancelled the loan, so a life insurance payout is not needed to settle one. A life insurance policy pays the person it names, or the estate. A policy is not tied to a particular debt unless the policy is designed that way, so who is named matters more than the debt; who gets a life insurance payout explains that.
So when people ask whether life insurance pays student loans, or whether a student loan can take life insurance money, the answer for these loans is that the loan has been cancelled, so nothing is owed for a payout to meet. Whether a policy has any other job for you is the question on whether you need life insurance at all, and the who needs cover hub sets out the wider picture.
Cover that falls with a loan balance is a real product, called decreasing term, but it is usually sold against debts that still exist at death, such as a repayment mortgage. How decreasing term cover works covers it.
When might life insurance matter for other debts?
The reason people ask about student loans is usually the debt that follows them: a mortgage, a car loan, a credit card. A student loan can still touch these. GOV.UK says student loans "do not appear on credit reports and do not affect your credit score. However, lenders may consider them during affordability checks for other types of borrowing, such as a mortgage." So the loan can shape how much you are lent, even though it is cancelled on death.
A mortgage is where cover often comes up, because the lender is owed a large sum and a household may rely on the home. Whether you need life insurance for a mortgage goes through what lenders say. If you have a child or someone else who depends on your income, life insurance when you have a child looks at that, and how much life cover you might need sets out how people think about the amount.
For a personal loan, car finance or overdraft, what happens at death depends on the lender's terms and on any insurance attached to the loan. Loan protection insurance explained sets out the differences between the products that carry that name. Your own loan agreement is the starting point.
Professional and Career Development Loans are older. GOV.UK says "The Professional and Career Development Loan scheme is now closed for new applications" and "If you have an existing loan, it will not be affected." For help with an existing one it says to contact the bank that manages the loan. What happens to one of these loans if the borrower dies is a question to ask that bank, or a broker on the free call-back, who can also talk through how cover might sit alongside it.
Should you want your debts and the people who rely on you looked at together, put your details into the form beside this text and an FCA-authorised broker will phone at a time that works for you, with no fee. Buying anything remains your decision.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need life insurance to cover a student loan?
Not for a government student loan, because the Student Loans Company cancels it on the borrower's death. Life insurance may still matter for other borrowing or for people who rely on your income.
Can a student loan be passed to my family?
GOV.UK says the Student Loans Company will cancel the loan of someone who has died. What it asks of the family is to tell the Student Loans Company and send evidence, as set out above.
Is term life insurance for student loans worth it?
A term policy pays a set sum if you die within its term, so it can help with debts that survive you. The student loan is not one of them, so a term policy would be for other reasons, such as a mortgage or people who depend on you. The guide to how term life insurance works explains the product.
Who do I tell if a graduate has died?
The Student Loans Company, with the customer reference number and one of the accepted pieces of evidence, such as an original death certificate. You can call or write to them.
Is an Advanced Learner Loan cancelled on death too?
The Student Loans Company's guide to Advanced Learner Loans (updated June 2026, section 5.10) uses the same wording: it may be cancelled and you will never have to pay it back "such as if you die before you pay the Advanced Learner Loan off". For any other loan type, the Student Loans Company can confirm the position.
