What life insurance pays out for is a death during the policy term, whether it follows an illness, old age or an accident: the policies quoted here ask when the person died, not what they died of. Aviva's Life Insurance Plan, Legal & General and Zurich each exclude suicide in the early part of the policy, and Legal & General and Zurich list any further exclusion in the documents sent with your own policy.

If it would help to hear how this applies to cover you are weighing up, an FCA-authorised broker can explain it for your own situation. Send your name and number through the form on this page, and a free call back follows.

Does the cause of death affect whether life insurance pays?

Aviva's Life Insurance Plan conditions (DA03011, May 2023) put the death benefit in a single sentence: "We’ll pay this benefit if the life covered dies during the policy term." Legal & General's Life Insurance terms (QGI12849, October 2026) make the same point: a lump sum is paid when the life insured dies, or is diagnosed as terminally ill, inside the term, and then the policy comes to an end.

The test in both is timing. A death from cancer, a heart attack or old age is a claim under those words if it happens while the policy is in force, and it is then checked against the rest of the policy: premiums paid, an accurate application and any exclusion on the schedule. A cancer diagnosis or heart attack that the person lives through is a different event, which life cover on its own is not built to pay for; the section on what a life policy never pays for explains what is.

If cancer is why you are reading this, Macmillan Cancer Support runs a helpline for people with cancer: 0808 808 00 00, open 8am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday.

An accident counts the same way under the death benefit wording above. Cover that pays only when a death is accidental is a separate, narrower product, explained in what accident-only cover pays, and the basics of term cover are in how life insurance works.

Aviva's guide to payouts (published 10 July 2026, last updated 19 May 2026) reminds readers that "Every insurer’s process and definitions can differ a little", so the wording of your own policy is what counts. The same guide says the trustees receive the money when a policy is in trust, and that it usually goes to the estate when it is not; whether a payout is taxable is covered separately.

Can the money be paid before a death?

On these policies, yes, if a terminal illness diagnosis meets the insurer's definition. Aviva's Life Insurance Plan pays its terminal illness benefit on a diagnosis during the policy term, and its policy summary (DA03008, May 2023) rules out a claim where the life expectancy is longer than 12 months. Legal & General asks for both the hospital consultant and its own Medical Officer to expect death within 12 months, and treats the payment as an advance of the death benefit, which can be smaller than the sum that would have been paid on death. Once either claim is paid, the cover ends.

Cut-off points near the end of a term and how such a claim is made are set out in terminal illness benefit in life insurance.

How long does the suicide exclusion last?

Each insurer words this differently. Aviva's Life Insurance Plan conditions exclude a death from suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury in the policy's first 12 months, counted from its start date, and in that case the policy ends. Zurich's Key Features (NP720500009, February 2025) also use 12 months, counted from the start date or from the date you increase your cover. Legal & General's period is the first year: it cancels the policy where the death in that year was a suicide, followed intentional and serious self-injury, or was an event it reasonably judges to be the person taking their own life. Writing about the market more widely, an Aviva guide (last updated 12 June 2026) puts it that for most insurers the exclusion runs for somewhere between 12 and 24 months from when the policy was taken out, so the period printed in your own policy is the one that applies.

Joint policies, a death some time after an attempt, how an insurer forms its view and what changes once the period has passed are all covered in does life insurance cover suicidal death.

Where does a policy list its exclusions?

Beyond the suicide clause, exclusions belong to the individual policy. Legal & General's terms point to the Policy Schedule, sent once the cover has started, as the place any exclusions appear. Zurich says that if it applies additional specific exclusions it will show them on your Confirmation of terms, and that its full terms and conditions set out every situation in which it will not pay. Those two documents are where to look before relying on cover for a particular risk, such as a hobby or a job.

A death abroad is dealt with in the terms as well. Aviva's direct Life Insurance booklet (EDCO2264, January 2026) is plain on this: "For a death claim, you can be anywhere in the world." For a different policy, the broker can check how its terms treat travel or living abroad when they ring you back.

What else has to be in order for a claim to be paid?

Cause aside, other conditions have to be met. Aviva's payouts guide lists cases where a payout may not be made, including a policy that had ended or a claimable event outside the term, premiums that weren't paid so cover stopped, and an application that wasn't complete or accurate. On the last point, the Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012 asks the applicant to take reasonable care not to misrepresent anything, and Legal & General's terms draw the line the Act draws: a deliberate or reckless answer can lead it to cancel the policy and decline the claim, while a careless one can mean amended terms or reduced cover. More on this is in life insurance disclosure requirements and can a life insurance company refuse to pay.

What does a life policy never pay for?

A term policy pays nothing if the person covered outlives it. Legal & General's cover lasts from the policy's start date until its expiry date, and a death outside the policy term is one of the cases Aviva's policy summary gives for not paying. See how long term life insurance lasts and life insurance cover till what age.

It is not savings either. Aviva's direct booklet says the insurance has no cash value at any time unless a valid claim is made, and Zurich's Key Features say the policy has no cash-in value. What happens when cover stops early is in what happens when you cancel.

A serious illness the person survives is the job of critical illness cover, a separate benefit with its own definitions. Legal & General's critical illness terms (QGI14872, October 2026) pay when an illness or procedure meets one of its definitions and the person survives for 14 days from diagnosis, and its children's cover runs from 30 days of age to the child's 18th birthday, or 21st if in full-time education. A heart attack or cancer is paid only if it meets the definition; see when critical illness cover pays out, critical illness cover and heart attacks and critical illness cover for cancer. Other pay-outs while alive are in what life insurance pays if you don't die.

Frequently asked questions

Will a policy pay if someone dies of old age?

Yes, if the policy is still running at the time, because the payout depends on the death falling inside the term rather than on its cause. A term policy that ended before the death pays nothing, so the age at which cover stops is the thing to check.

Does life insurance cover an overdose, alcohol poisoning, murder or war?

A general answer cannot settle this, because exclusions are set out in each policy's own schedule or confirmation of terms. If you have a particular policy or situation in mind, a broker can go through it with you on a free call-back.

Does life insurance pay the full amount?

It depends on the type of cover. Aviva's direct booklet says level insurance pays the amount shown in the Insurance Summary, while the amount under decreasing insurance reduces each month after the first, reaching zero when the insurance ends. Legal & General's terminal illness payment can also be less than the death payment would have been.
