To cancel a life insurance application before the policy starts, the insurers' own documents describe one step: telling the insurer you no longer want it to go ahead. Legal & General's policy summary counts from the date you tell it so, and Aviva's medical-checks page lists withdrawing your application as one of the points at which its free cover ends. Should you want an FCA-authorised broker to talk through withdrawing, a no-cost return call from one is requested using the form on this page.
What do insurers' documents say about withdrawing an application?
The wording sits in the pages about free cover during the assessment, so it is easiest to take insurer by insurer.
Aviva's Life Insurance+ policy summary (February 2026) offers a "Protection Promise" to customers under 55 who are waiting for a decision. The free cover ends on the earliest of several dates, and one of them is the date you withdraw your application. Aviva's consumer page on medical checks (last updated 2 July 2025) puts it this way: "This lasts until we’ve made our decision, you withdraw your application, or up to 90 days after we’ve confirmed your protection promise cover has started." The summary also ends it at your policy start date.
Legal & General's summary for its life insurance with critical illness cover (October 2026) describes an accidental death benefit that runs from receipt of your application, for up to 90 days or until L&G accepts, postpones or declines it. The same section says L&G does not provide the benefit "From the date you tell us that you no longer want the application to proceed." For L&G the trigger is therefore telling the insurer.
VitalityLife's Personal Protection Plan Provisions (February 2025, adviser literature) give "Immediate Cover" while it assesses a life application. It stops when Vitality accepts or declines, when 90 days pass, or when "Your application is cancelled". The cover is subject to conditions, among them a completed Direct Debit instruction and "no" to every medical and health question.
Scottish Widows' Free Accidental Death Cover and Free Mortgage Cover leaflets (both October 2025, published on its adviser site) each say the cover lasts 90 days or until you withdraw your application, whichever is earlier. Zurich's Life Protection key features (February 2025) say free cover may be offered while an application is assessed, and refer to separate free cover terms for the detail.
What happens to medical reports and consent if you withdraw?
Aviva's customer guide for adviser applications (May 2026) says you give consent to access your medical records and GP details during the application, and that it asks for a medical report only where needed: "This will either be a report completed by your GP from your medical records, or a nurse or doctor will contact you to carry out a medical exam." Its consumer page adds that Aviva covers the cost of an exam and arranges it.
Zurich's key features list among your duties "Allow us to access your medical records for up to six months after your policy has started", which concerns a policy that has begun, and "Tell us about any changes to the information on your application before your policy starts."
Whether a report already requested is still used once you withdraw is for the insurer to say, and a broker calling you on request can put that question to it for you.
What happens to a first premium or Direct Debit?
Vitality's Immediate Cover needs a completed Direct Debit instruction before it applies, so the paperwork can exist before any cover starts. Whether money already taken, or a Direct Debit already set up, is returned or cancelled on withdrawal is for the insurer to confirm. A broker can help you word that request.
Once a policy is running, refunds follow the cooling-off rules instead.
How is withdrawing different from the 30-day cancellation right?
Withdrawing ends an application. Cancelling ends a policy that has started, and the FCA's 30-day right to cancel (ICOBS 7.1.5) runs from when you are told the contract has been concluded. Legal & General's terms say "Once your policy starts, we'll let you know about your right to cancel."
The windows, refunds and what changes after them are set out in the cancellation period for life insurance; what happens if you cancel covers the other side.
What should you check before you withdraw?
Several things are worth settling first:
- Whether free cover is running. Aviva, Vitality and Scottish Widows end it on withdrawal, so you would be without it.
- Whether you are replacing cover you already have. L&G's accidental death benefit is not provided where the application replaces an existing L&G policy that still gives cover; switching life insurance companies explains the order.
- Whether the insurer has already deferred or declined the application, which ends Aviva's and L&G's free cover in any case. What to do if you are declined is a separate path.
- Whether you will apply elsewhere, since what you must disclose applies to the new application.
Torn between withdrawing and letting the application run? Withdrawing, waiting for a decision and replacement cover are all things a broker can go over with you on a free phone call, which the short form on this page sets up.
Frequently asked questions
Does free cover carry on if I withdraw my application?
Not according to Aviva, Vitality, L&G and Scottish Widows: each ends its interim cover on withdrawal or cancellation of the application, in the wording above. Check your own insurer's terms.
Can the insurer withdraw its free cover before I withdraw my application?
Aviva can, until the cover is confirmed. Its Life Insurance+ summary says "Until we confirm the Protection Promise has started, we can change or withdraw it at any time." After that, the end dates set out above apply.
Will a withdrawn application count against me with another insurer?
A broker can talk that through at the free call-back, and medical questions for life insurance shows what a new application asks.
