To cancel a Zurich life insurance policy, you contact Zurich and tell it you want to end the cover; there is no cash-in value, and premiums come back only if you cancel in the first 30 days. This guide covers Zurich Life Protection only, using Zurich's customer key features for that policy (print code NP720500009 (02/25)); a different or older Zurich policy may have its own terms.
If you are cancelling to switch, the order matters: new cover first, then the cancellation. For the switch itself, an FCA-authorised broker will phone and go over it at no cost when you have submitted the form on this page.
Do you get any money back if you cancel?
It depends on when you cancel. Zurich's key features give two cases:
| When you cancel | What Zurich says about premiums |
|---|---|
| Within the first 30 days | It refunds any premiums you have paid. |
| After the first 30 days | It will not refund any premiums you have already paid. |
The cover ends when the policy is cancelled, so a later death or diagnosis would not be paid under it. To see when your 30 days began and when they end, go by the dates in the paperwork Zurich sent when the policy started. If you are close to the end of the window, ask Zurich on the phone and keep a note of the date you made the request.
Once the first 30 days have passed, cancelling gives you nothing back; it only stops future premiums. For how cancelling works across insurers generally, read our wider cancellation guide.
Is there a surrender value or a way to cash in a Zurich policy?
No. The key features state plainly: "The policy has no cash-in value." A surrender value is the sum some savings-type policies pay if you hand the policy back, and this policy does not build one up. So there is no surrender form to complete and nothing to cash in, only cancellation.
That is a feature of this policy, not of every product with Zurich's name on it. Whole-of-life and savings-linked plans from other providers can work differently, and can you cash in life insurance sets out how to tell. If you hold a Zurich policy that is not Zurich Life Protection, a broker reached by the form on this page can read the documents with you.
How do you cancel a Zurich life insurance policy?
The key features say: "You can cancel your policy at any time by contacting us to let us know". It points to its contact details in the section called "How to contact us and making a claim". As printed in that edition, they are:
- telephone 0370 850 5682, Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, excluding bank holidays;
- post to Zurich Customer Services, Protection Operations, PO Box 4157, Swindon, SN4 4QB;
- email life.service@uk.zurich.com.
Phone numbers and opening hours change, so check the current ones on your policy paperwork or in your online account before you ring or write. Zurich collects premiums by direct debit, so when you ring or write, ask it to confirm the date your cover ends and the last payment it will take.
When you first take out a policy, Zurich says it sends "details of how to cancel your policy if you've changed your mind". That paperwork is the first place to look for a cancellation form or reference number. How Zurich's online account or app handles requests like this is covered in the Zurich life insurance app guide.
Is it enough to let the direct debit lapse?
Stopping the direct debit is not the same as cancelling, though after 30 days the money outcome is the same. Zurich's key features say: "If you stop paying your premiums, your cover and policy will end. You won't get back any of the premiums you've already paid."
Two practical points follow. First, you may want to tell Zurich rather than let the policy fall away, so that you know exactly when the cover stopped. Second, among the situations Zurich lists in which a claim could be refused or reduced is this one: "you haven't paid all the premiums that were due". If you are struggling to pay, contacting Zurich first, rather than just cancelling the direct debit, keeps your options open.
Can you cancel a joint policy if you have separated?
Zurich's key features describe a separation benefit for joint policies. If you separate, divorce or have a civil partnership dissolved, you "may have the option to cancel this policy and start individual policies for one or both of you, without giving us any more details about your health or personal circumstances". The wording is "may", so ask Zurich whether it applies to your policy and what it needs from each of you.
Whether one person can end a joint policy alone is a wider question, answered in can one person cancel a joint policy. Joint life insurance after a divorce covers the money side of a split, and a policy held in trust has its own rules, in cancelling a policy in trust.
Does the reason you took out the cover still apply?
Cancelling is easy to do and hard to undo. A new policy is priced on your age, health, occupation and tobacco use at the time you apply, which Zurich lists among the things that set the cost, so replacement cover started later is likely to be assessed afresh and may cost more or be refused. Your current premiums, by contrast, are described as guaranteed for the term, with exceptions Zurich lists.
Zurich also asks policyholders to review cover during the term to make sure it still suits them. Before ending a policy, it is worth asking whether the need has really gone: a mortgage may still be running, or a partner or child may still depend on your income. If cover that fits you is available elsewhere, start it before you cancel, so there is no gap. If your health has changed, look at life insurance with medical conditions first.
What replacing your Zurich policy would involve is a fair question to raise when the broker rings; the contact form on this page needs nothing more than basic details.
How a different Zurich policy, or one that began long ago, handles cancellation is something the broker or Zurich can confirm from your own documents. Compare with cancelling a Legal & General policy if you hold both, and see the Zurich life policy guide for what the cover includes.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a cancellation form for Zurich life insurance?
Zurich's key features say to contact it to cancel and point to its phone, post and email details. Whether a form is needed for your policy is shown in the paperwork it sent you, or Zurich can tell you when you get in touch.
Can I cancel Zurich life insurance online?
The key features name phone, post and email for cancelling. Zurich also runs a customer portal, so ask there or on the phone whether an online request is accepted for your policy.
What happens if I miss a payment on my Zurich life insurance?
The key features describe what happens when you stop paying altogether: the policy and cover end and no premiums are returned. Whether one missed collection brings a grace period or a reminder turns on your own terms, which a broker will explain without charge when returning your request.
Will cancelling affect a claim made before I cancel?
If a claim is already under way, speak to Zurich before you cancel anything and ask how ending the policy would affect it.
