The Post Office life insurance number 0800 068 8014 (weekdays, 9am to 7pm) is the line for policies bought after 31 January 2022; older policies, and some term policies bought through MoneySupermarket, use other numbers, so check the purchase date on your policy schedule first. Thinking about swapping, not just stopping, a Post Office policy? Replacement options are something an FCA-authorised broker can compare with you by phone, no fee involved; the short form on this page lines that conversation up.
Which Post Office life insurance number is on your papers?
The Post Office name sits on two products from two insurers: Over 50s Life Cover, underwritten by Aviva, and a term plan with optional critical illness and children's cover, underwritten by Scottish Friendly. Our guide to how the two Post Office plans differ covers that split. For getting in touch, the Post Office's help page says "The contact details for the insurer vary depending on the date the policy was taken out, which you can see on the policy schedule." On 27 October 2026 it listed these routes:
| Policy bought | Who the help page says to call | Number and hours it prints |
|---|---|---|
| After 31 January 2022 | Neilson Financial Services | 0800 068 8014, Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm; closed Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays |
| Between 31 January 2017 and 31 January 2022 | Royal London | 0345 266 1483, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm; closed Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays |
| Before 31 January 2017 | Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited | 0800 158 3065, Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm; closed bank holidays |
| Post Office Life Insurance (term plan) bought via MoneySupermarket between October 2018 and November 2022 | Scottish Friendly | 0333 323 5433 |
The help page explains the last row: such a policy is provided by Scottish Friendly Assurance Society Limited, which "can be verified by referring to the policy documents", and that number is for policy enquiries and claims. If your purchase date falls in more than one row, the name of the insurer on your schedule is the safest guide, and the number printed on your own papers is the one to use.
Current key facts for both plans use 0800 068 8014 for questions, cancellations, claims and complaints. A policy bought now points back to that same line.
How else can you reach them, and how do you check what you hold?
Both current key facts documents give a postal address and separate email addresses by purpose. Letters go to PO Box 6063, Windsor, SL4 9GL, marked for Customer Services at the Post Office. For cancelling, both documents give service@postofficelife.co.uk; claims and complaints have their own addresses, which your key facts list.
Checking a policy starts with the policy schedule, which the Over 50s terms say is issued once Aviva accepts the application, and which the term terms say Scottish Friendly issues. It states your premium and benefit amount. The term plan also sends a statement of fact with your health and lifestyle answers, and its terms ask you to tell the Customer Service team if anything on it is wrong. Both plans' terms say that it is your responsibility to check the policy every year and to tell the Customer Service team when your name, address or bank details change.
To find out whether your policy has an online account or app, ask the team on the number for your purchase date; for help deciding whether the cover still suits you, a broker will explain it for free if you fill in the form.
Cancelling Over 50s Life Cover
The key facts give you 30 days from the date you receive your policy documents to decide. Contact the Customer Service team within that time and the terms say "Any premium you may have paid will be refunded, subject to no valid claim being made." After your request arrives, "your cover will be cancelled and you will be sent a letter of confirmation."
Cancelling after 30 days is allowed, but "you will not receive any refund of premiums." Two other points matter for this plan:
- It has no cash-in value at any time, so after the first 30 days cancelling returns nothing to you.
- If you cancel having paid at least half of the premiums due under the policy, you are eligible for the Protected Benefit, meaning Aviva will still pay at least half of the benefit amount on death. The Over 50s Life Cover guide explains how that half is counted.
The contact details for cancelling are 0800 068 8014 (weekdays between 9am and 7pm), the Windsor address above, or service@postofficelife.co.uk. If you do nothing, the policy runs as set out in its terms and schedule and Aviva collects premiums as agreed.
Cancelling the term plan and its extras
The term plan works on the same 30-day clock, with two features of its own. Its terms say you must contact the team within 30 days of receiving your policy documents to get a full refund of premiums paid for the cancelled cover, again subject to no valid claim, and that cancelling after that means no refund of premium.
The optional extras can be cancelled separately. Critical illness or children's cover added after the policy started has its own 30 days, counted from the date you receive the updated schedule, and if you cancel within that window any related premium is refunded, subject to no valid claim being made. The help page adds that if you cancel your Post Office Life Insurance, the critical illness cover is cancelled with it. What those extras involve is on our add-ons page.
The cancellation route is the same line, address and email as above, and a letter confirming the cancellation follows. Scottish Friendly can also end the policy itself in four situations, among them when two consecutive premiums are not paid. If your term policy was bought via MoneySupermarket between October 2018 and November 2022 and its documents name Scottish Friendly, ring 0333 323 5433 rather than the Post Office line.
Paying less without ending the policy
Both sets of terms offer a way to cut costs without ending the policy. The Over 50s key facts say "you can reduce your premium payments by decreasing the benefit amount at any time, subject to the minimum benefit amount of £1,000." The term key facts say you can decrease your premium payments and benefit amount at any time, subject to the minimum benefit amounts available. Each tells you to ask the Customer Service team if affordability is the problem.
The general trade-offs are in our guides to what happens when you cancel and the cancellation period. Before you cancel anything, a chat about replacement cover costs nothing: ask for the broker's call on this page, from an FCA-authorised firm.
Cover held in trust is covered in cancelling a policy in trust, and the gift card's own terms are on the gift card page.
If the call does not settle it
For a complaint, the key facts use the same 0800 068 8014 line and Windsor address, with complaints@postofficelife.co.uk, and ask for your policy number. They say an acknowledgment letter follows within five working days if it cannot be resolved immediately, and that after eight weeks, or sooner if you remain dissatisfied with the final response, you can take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service on 0800 023 4567 or 0300 123 9123. Following the procedure does not affect your legal rights.
If the policyholder has died, the route is different and is set out on our Post Office claim page. The wider picture of changing cover sits under our reviewing and switching hub.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Post Office life insurance number free to call?
The help page says all calls to 0800 numbers are free from a landline or mobile. That covers 0800 068 8014 and 0800 158 3065. The same page says calls to 0345 numbers, such as Royal London's, cost no more than a call to a standard 01 or 02 number and may be included in your call package.
Can I cancel Post Office life insurance by email?
The key facts list an email address among the cancellation contact details, next to the phone number and the Windsor postal address. The 30-day refund period runs from the day you receive your policy documents.
Will I get my money back if I cancel after a few months?
Both sets of terms say no refund of premiums is paid for cancelling after the 30 days. Over 50s Life Cover has no cash-in value at any time.
Which insurer is my Post Office policy with?
Your policy schedule names it. Over 50s Life Cover is underwritten by Aviva and the term plan by Scottish Friendly; the help page lists different contacts for older policies.
Anyone wanting fresh protection once this policy is sorted can request a free call from a broker using the form here.
