Does life insurance have legal cover? Not as part of the cover itself, which pays a sum if you die, but some insurers add separate extras to a policy: a legal helpline, a free simple will or a GP service in an app. This guide sets out what Aviva, Royal London, LV= and Beagle Street say about theirs, from their own pages read on 27 October 2026.

If a free will, a legal line or a GP app would sway your choice, ask an FCA-authorised broker which policies carry them; the call-back that this page's form sets up costs nothing.

Which insurers add a legal helpline, a will or a GP service?

The table sets down what each insurer's own page says about legal help and wills; GP services have their own section.

InsurerLegal helpWill
Aviva (DigiCare+ app)Aviva describes "Free and discounted legal services and funeral support to help navigate the death of a loved one or significant life event."Will writing services are listed among its legal support
Royal London (Menu Plan, Helping Hand)A legal helpline within Helping HandWills are named among the topics the helpline could help with
LV=A Legal Advice Line, with "free access" wording on its life insurance pageNot named in LV='s list of member benefits
Beagle StreetAn hour of free legal adviceA free simple will

As these insurers describe them, the legal items are services you can call on rather than an insurer paying your legal bills, and each insurer limits who qualifies.

When does a will come with a policy, and what are the limits?

A will is not part of the cover itself. Where one appears, it is a separate offer that comes with buying the policy. Beagle Street's benefits terms spell out the conditions: a customer is eligible for a free simple will while the policy is active and paid up to date, and a joint policy earns one simple will or one joint mirror will.

The terms define a simple will as one leaving the estate to at most six beneficiaries, without trusts or tax planning. A more complex will, or extra services, is charged to the customer by the firm providing it. If you cancel the policy within six months of taking up the offer, the terms let Beagle Street claim the cost of the free will back.

Aviva lists will writing and Lasting Power of Attorney services within the legal support in DigiCare+, and it calls the legal services free and discounted, so the no-fee DigiCare+ legal services are worth pinning down with a broker, who checks such details for nothing once you send the form. Royal London says the legal professionals on its independent helpline "could help you with difficult situations such as employment rights, wills and probate or inheritance tax", and adds that wills, probate and inheritance tax are not regulated by the FCA or the Prudential Regulation Authority. A will and a trust do different jobs, and putting a policy in trust is its own step.

What can the legal helplines help with, and what do they cost?

Beagle Street provides "An hour of free legal advice" and says the hour "can be split over multiple calls". You need an active Beagle Street policy and to be a UK resident. If you want more help afterwards, the solicitors can introduce an expert for a fee agreed with you before they go ahead, so the free part is the first hour only.

Royal London names employment rights, wills and probate, and inheritance tax as examples of what its legal professionals could help with. LV= puts "free access" to a Legal Advice Line on its life insurance page but marks the line "Product eligibility applies" on its member benefits page. Whether Royal London's line costs anything, and limits such as call length at LV= or Royal London, are points a broker can raise with each insurer during your free call-back.

Which GP and wellbeing services come with a policy?

Aviva's DigiCare+ app offers "24/7 access to unlimited appointments (subject to fair usage policy) with a private GP", plus nutrition advice, mental health support and a bereavement service giving "Practical support and emotional comfort when someone close to you dies." Aviva says you can share many of these benefits with eligible family members. Not everything is free: residency restrictions apply, charges for some services may apply, and Aviva's optional annual health check costs £39.95.

Which Aviva policies qualify depends on how and when you bought. Aviva lists purchases of Aviva Life Insurance, over 50 Life Insurance or Critical Illness cover made directly from Aviva from 14 April 2021, and it has separate eligibility rules for policies bought through an adviser. The cover is described on Aviva Life Insurance Plus.

Royal London's Helping Hand lets you "Speak to a doctor by video, phone or message via HealthHero", and Royal London says Menu Plan holders have access to the service. Royal London's Helping Hand sets out its nurse support and helplines. For LV=, the page says "Depending on your policy, additional support services may be available to you as well as member benefits", and LV= member benefits and the gift card terms explains the Doctor Services entry in full.

Are the extras part of the policy, and can they be withdrawn?

No, and this matters more than the list. Aviva says "These services are non-contractual benefits Aviva can change or withdraw at any time." Royal London says its services "aren't part of our terms and conditions and don't form part of your insurance contract with us", so it "could amend or withdraw you or your family's access to these services at any time". It also says a third party provides each service. Beagle Street likewise reserves the right to amend or withdraw its free will offer at any time.

Aviva itself puts the policy first: "The main reason for taking out one of our policies should be the financial protection it provides, not the benefits of Aviva DigiCare+." The payout, the term and the exclusions decide what a claim pays. Gift cards and cashback are a different kind of incentive, with their own conditions, on life insurance discounts, cashback and gift cards.

How do you find out which extras you would get?

Because extras differ by insurer, product and purchase route, a few checks save disappointment:

  • Ask which named product the extra attaches to, and whether buying direct or through a broker changes it.
  • Ask whether the legal line, will or GP service is free, discounted or charged, and what the limits are.
  • Ask whether your partner or children can use it.
  • Ask what happens to the extra if you cancel or the insurer withdraws it.

Insurers outside the four above may attach extras of their own. The insurers compared guide sets the firms side by side, and what free life insurance means deals with whether a policy itself can cost nothing. Once you have a shortlist, this page's form books a free call-back, and the broker can put the legal, will and GP extras to each insurer for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does life insurance have legal cover?

The cover pays a sum if you die; it is not an insurer paying your legal costs. Some insurers add a legal helpline or advice line as an extra, such as Beagle Street's hour of free legal advice.

Does life insurance include a will?

Not by default. Beagle Street offers a free simple will to eligible customers, and Aviva lists will writing among its legal services, while what other insurers offer differs.

Is the Aviva DigiCare+ app free to use?

Aviva says there is no extra cost to download the app, although mobile data charges might apply. Some services inside it are charged, such as the annual health check at £39.95.

Do I keep the free will if I cancel the policy?

Within six months of taking up the offer, cancelling lets Beagle Street claim back what the will cost. Eligibility also depends on the policy staying active and paid up to date.
